The work continues for Duchess Kate, whose focus on helping kids and families resumed today with a visit to a university to discuss the latest research into the first five years of children’s lives.

At the University College London’s Centre for Longitudinal Studies, the Duchess of Cambridge—re-wearing a houndstooth Zara midi dress and a pair of gray Hugo Boss heels—met with leading researchers working on a new holistic study.

Speaking ahead of the visit, Kate said in a statement shared with outlets including BAZAAR.com, “Our early childhoods shape our adult lives and knowing more about what impacts this critical time is fundamental to understanding what we as a society can do to improve our future health and happiness.”

The university’s Children of the 2020s study promises to give further proof of the importance of the first nine months to five years of a child’s life and, Kate explained, “provide insights into the most critical aspects of early childhood, as well as the factors which support or hinder positive lifelong outcomes.”

She added, “I am committed to supporting greater in-depth research in this vital area and I’m delighted to be meeting all those behind the study at this early stage.”

Kate—who announced the new Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood in June—chose to visit the university as its research will play an important role in her focus on the early years. It also promises, Kensington Palace wrote in a statement, to look at a “wide range of factors that affect children’s development and education in the early years, including the home environment, the community, early years services and the broader social and economic circumstances of the family.”

During her Tuesday visit, the duchess viewed archive material of historic research dating back to the 1940s and also looked at past questionnaires that had been given to mothers in the 1950s. One particular survey, from 1958, questioned new moms on their smoking habits, which went on to help researchers look into the impact smoking had on a child’s life (and eventually led to a British public health campaign to stop women from smoking while pregnant). “It’s fascinating to be able to look back at this time,” Kate said to the university’s Professor Alissa Goodman, who guided the duchess through the archives.

Like previous academics, researchers at UCL want their Children of the 2020s study to help other’s understand how factors, such as home environment and community, can impact a child’s social, cognitive, and early language development, as well as their mental health. The study begins in January 2022 and is seeking to recruit more than 8,000 babies born in April, May, and June of this year.

The lead researcher, Professor Pasco Fearon, said of Kate’s visit, “We share with Her Royal Highness a commitment to improving children’s development and life chances through high quality research and good early years policy and we believe the Children of the 2020s study will play a really important part of that for this next generation of children.”
