Stranger Things Season 4: Everything We Know

Stranger Things 3 has left some big questions unanswered. Luckily for fans, a fourth season is underway and already in production. Netflix has already released a teaser for it, too. The details remain slim for now, but we’ve gathered everything we know about Stranger Things 4 so far.

Stranger Things 4 premieres in 2022.

In a new sneak peek, Netflix shared that the long-awaited fourth season of Stranger Things will arrive in 2022. (The exact date is still unknown.) The footage teases new scenes from the next installment, including Eleven—with bangs!—and the gang in some tense situations.

Netflix confirmed the fourth season back in 2019.

After months of speculation, the streaming giant confirmed Stranger Things 4 in September 2019 with a teaser that shows the number four in the series’ iconic neon lettering, placed somewhere in the Upside Down.

Millie Bobby Brown (Eleven) said while sharing the clip in an Instagram post, “We’re not in Hawkins anymore,” referencing the small Indiana town where the events in Stranger Things take place. The series seems to move beyond Hawkins’s borders, especially since Season 3 ended with Eleven and the Byers family moving out of town, followed by a post-credits scene in Russia, according to Entertainment Weekly. Showrunner Matt Duffer had also told the outlet he wanted to “open up” the story “into areas outside of Hawkins.”

In the past few years, the Stranger Things creative team has dropped hints that the series would continue for more than three seasons. Shawn Levy conclusively told Collider in April 2018, “I mean I will say we have a good sense of stuff that happens in Season 4. Season 4 is definitely happening.” However, those storylines have not yet been revealed.

As of right now, no premiere date has been announced, but we do know that Hopper is back. (Keep scrolling.)

Stranger Things 4 is not the last season.

Though Netflix has yet to confirm that Stranger Things will return for a fifth season, the showrunners and executive producers Matt and Ross Duffer have opened up about the series’ future. Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter in August, the duo were asked if Season 4 would be the end of Stranger Things. Ross Duffer replied, “Season four won’t be the end. We know what the end is, and we know when it is. [The pandemic] has given us time to look ahead, figure out what is best for the show. Starting to fill that out gave us a better idea of how long we need to tell that story.” Incredible news for fans. So bring on Season 5!

Levy had previously told Entertainment Weekly in 2017, “The truth is we’re definitely going four seasons and there’s very much the possibility of a fifth. Beyond that, it becomes I think very unlikely.”

The Duffer brothers are still on board.

In February 2018, rumors circulated that the Duffers would no longer be involved in Stranger Things “in a showrunner capacity” after Season 3, but Netflix quickly shut that gossip down.

“Don’t drop your Eggos. Rumors that the Duffer Bros are leaving Stranger Things after Season 3 are false,” the company tweeted.

The story will move outside of Hawkins.

The Duffer brothers told Entertainment Weekly that they want to take the story beyond Hawkins for Season 4. “I think the biggest thing that’s going to happen is it’s going to open up a little bit, not necessarily in terms of scale, in terms of special effects, but open up in terms of allowing plotlines into areas outside of Hawkins,” Matt Duffer told EW.

Ross Duffer, also confirmed that the show would explore what was revealed in the Season 3 post-credits sequence: particularly, what the Russians are doing with a Demogorgon, and the identity of “the American” in the cell.

Caleb McLaughlin wants another dramatic arc for Lucas.

The man behind Lucas refused to confirm to Entertainment Weekly whether Season 4 of the show was even happening, but he did reveal he wants more “clutch” moments in future seasons, like Lucas’s pivotal use of the slingshot in Season 3. He also revealed he’d like to see Lucas’s relationship with Max (Sadie Sink) evolve.

Maya Hawke wants to see Robin in the video store.

At the end of Season 3, Robin (Maya Hawke) secured a job at the local movie rental store. In an interview with Consequence of Sound, Hawke said she wants to see her character’s new job play out. “So many of the great minds of the ‘80s and ‘80s filmmakers and creatives started out working in video stores, and as far as I know, that environment hasn’t really been explored on TV,” she said.

Hopper is alive!

After last season’s cliffhanger, the first teaser for Season 4 confirms that Hopper isn’t gone—but he’s not completely safe, either. He’s a prisoner in Kamchatka, Russia, according to a description from Netflix. The footage shows him in a snowy landscape building a railroad with other prisoners under the strict watch of armed guards. His mop of hair and mustache are gone too.

A “buried” threat will surface.

According to a statement from Netflix, Hopper will “face dangers both human…and other.” But back in the U.S., “a new horror is beginning to surface, something long buried, something that connects everything….”

The statement adds, “Season 4 is shaping up to be the biggest and most frightening season yet, and we cannot wait for everyone to see more. In the meantime — pray for the American.”

The Season 4 table read has already happened.

In March 2020, Netflix released a behind-the-scenes video of the cast’s Season 4 table read in Atlanta. The sweet retro-filtered footage showed all of the stars reuniting to go through the script for the first time together.

Familiar faces include: Millie Bobby Brown (Eleven), Finn Wolfhard (Mike Wheeler), Noah Schnapp (Will Byers), Caleb McLaughlin (Lucas Sinclair), Dustin Henderson (Gaten Matarazzo), Sadie Sink (Max Mayfield), Joe Keery (Steve Harrington), Natalia Dyer (Nancy Wheeler), Charlie Heaton (Jonathan Byers), Priah Ferguson (Erica Sinclair), David Harbour (Jim Hopper), Winona Ryder (Joyce Byers), Cara Buono (Mrs. Wheeler), and Brett Gelman (Murray Bauman). Maya Hawke’s (Robin Buckley) name also appeared on a name plate in the video, confirming her return for the upcoming season.

Filming resumed after coronavirus delays.

Production shut down in March as lockdown and social distancing measures were enforced amid the coronavirus pandemic. But months later, on September 30, the team revealed it was filming once again. An Instagram post from the official Stranger Things social media accounts shows the cast and crew are back “in the Upside Down.”

This means, however, that Season 4 won’t arrive in October/November this year as it has in the past.

New roles were cast in quarantine.

In an interview with ComicBook.com, actor Joel Stoffer revealed that he would be joining the cast of Stranger Things 4. The star has previously been seen in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Stoffer told the site, “I’ve got a role that we haven’t shot yet on Stranger Things… I don’t expect it to become anything like long term, but it’ll be coming up. They contact me and I’ll go to Georgia, to Atlanta, and shoot it when they get back up and running. ‘Cause they’ve been obviously shut down for a while.”

As for who he might be playing, Stoffer didn’t provide many details. The actor explained, “I literally do not know anything… It was cast during quarantine a couple of months ago and I was sent the pages of my scene and that was it. And I didn’t know any of the actors or… I didn’t recognize any names in my scene. So, I don’t even know if I have additional scenes beyond that one scene. I expect that I do, but I really don’t know.”

At least nine episodes have been written.

In June, the writers of Strangers Things shared a photo of a stack of scripts on Twitter, revealing, “Stranger Things 4: the complete season. #ST4.” With the writing in the can, fans can rest assured that a fantastic season is on its way. But there’s even more this season to get excited about.

In a July interview with The Hollywood Reporter, cast member Natalia Dyer, who plays Nancy Wheeler, revealed that the pandemic has actually given the writers more time than usual to work on the show. In fact, only eight episodes were expected for Season 4, but it seems that a ninth script has been completed during quarantine.

Dyer explained, “Normally, we get the first few scripts, and then they have to keep writing due to the schedule of it. And it takes a while to craft a script. So, normally, there’s a kind of ‘writing as we’re going,’ but it seems they’ve had enough time. I think it’s maybe been a blessing for the writers, in some way, because they had the time to just sit down, think and create.”

In an interview with THR in August, Matt Duffer confirmed, “We’ve had a lot more time to work on the scripts. For the first time, we have all the scripts written and we’re able to look at it as a whole piece and make adjustments.”

But when it comes to resuming filming, the pandemic continues to impact the show. “Everyone’s excited to get back to work,” Ross Duffer revealed, “but the priority is the safety of the cast and crew, and that will dictate when we go back.”

So many new characters have joined Season 4.

As reported by Deadline, several new roles have now been cast, meaning lots of new characters will be gracing our screens in Season 4. Three new regulars join the cast of Stranger Things: Jamie Campbell Bower (who played a young Gellert Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald), Booksmart‘s Eduardo Franco, and Joseph Quinn (who played Koner in Game of Thrones).

Meanwhile, a whole host of recurring characters have also been announced. Perhaps most exciting of all is the addition of Robert Englund, known for immortalizing Freddy Kreuger on the big screen.

He will be joined by other recurring cast members including Tom Wlaschiha (Game of Thrones), Sherman Augustus (Westworld), Mason Dye (The Goldbergs), and Nikola Djuricko (In The Land of Blood and Honey).

The Hellfire Club is a focal point.

As well as casting a slew of new characters, the Stranger Things team has started revealing some of the storylines we can expect to see in new episodes. Season 4’s first episode will focus on The Hellfire Club, and Quinn’s character, Eddie Munson. As reported by Deadline, “Eddie is an audacious 80’s metalhead who runs The Hellfire Club, Hawkins High’s official D&D club. Hated by those who don’t understand him—and beloved by those who do—Eddie will find himself at the terrifying epicenter of this season’s mystery.”

Stranger Things will feature a psychiatric hospital.

Some of the new season is set to take place in a psychiatric hospital. Jamie Campbell Bower is playing a character named Peter Ballard, a caring orderly who works at the hospital. Meanwhile, Robert Englund will play Victor Creel, “a disturbed and intimidating man who is imprisoned in a psychiatric hospital for a gruesome murder in the 1950s,” per Deadline.

A new teaser hints at Eleven’s backstory.

Released on May 6, a Season 4 teaser shows children in the facility where Eleven was kept as a child, possibly foreshadowing the introduction of more superpowered youngsters. The clip also features Dr. Martin Brenner (Matthew Modine) and a door with the number 11 on the front. “Eleven, are you listening?” Dr. Brenner asks. The closing shot is a close-up on Eleven, gasping as she wakes up.

The latest teaser introduces a creepy new setting: the Creel House.

Netflix dropped a new peek at Season 4 during its Tudum event, giving fans a cryptic introduction to the gang’s new adventure. The clip starts with a flashback to a family of four moving into a home in the ’50s, followed by flashes of some creepy and devastating events. It then moves to the ’80s, with Dustin, Steve, Lucas, and the rest of the crew breaking into the now-abandoned house, which co-creator Matt Duffer has called “a super-important location” for the new season.
