Rewind to New York Fashion Week, September 2013. Everywhere you turned, you saw a Mansur Gavriel bucket bag, first released the previous June. Nearly a decade later, the overnight hit among fashion insiders has become something of a modern classic—and the CFDA award-winning accessories label behind it is ready to give it a refresh.
Mansur Gavriel just released a ” data-vars-ga-product-id=”83de0047-f1e7-4681-a621-ee54e631ebb0″ data-vars-ga-product-price=”0.00″ data-vars-ga-product-sem3-brand=”” data-vars-ga-product-sem3-category data-vars-ga-product-sem3-id data-affiliate-network data-affiliate=”true”>re-imagined leather bucket bag called the “Lilium,” available online now in two sizes. It’s a soft but structured evolution of the original, with a drawstring closure and folded sides referencing lilies both planted outside and painted by Georgia O’Keeffe and David Hockney. (Hence, the name.) The sculptural, yet delicate exterior belies its functional sensibility. Both versions are spacious enough for any and all daily essentials, with the large Lilium roomy enough for a 13″ laptop. Finally, a spring floral that’s actually groundbreaking.
“The bucket is our icon as a brand, and it felt natural to evolve it,” designer Rachel Mansur tells BAZAAR.com of her label’s latest release. “We’re also very drawn to the flower as a symbol, and we loved the idea of a bucket that opened like a flower.”
Creating a bucket bag that “blooms,” as designer Floriana Gavriel describes it, took a few tries. “We weren’t sure exactly how to create it and tried many different versions,” she says. In the end, simplicity won: “Some had many more panels, but ‘less is more’ ended up being the best approach. The bag with just the middle and side panels looked perfect and had beautiful proportions.”
“It’s elegant and classic, yet there is something very easy about it,” Mansur adds. She suggests carrying it like its Mansur Gavriel counterparts: dressed up or down with clean, minimal silhouettes and interesting colors.
