Jason Wu on Fall 2022 Beauty and His Namesake Makeup Brand

When it comes to fashion, one thing designer Jason Wu is best known for—aside from his sophisticated gowns and tailored separates—is his bold use of color, which was not only seen in pieces from his recent fall 2022 show, but also in the beauty looks that accompanied them.

The designer and lead makeup artist Diane Kendal drew inspiration from fashion illustrations housed in Wu’s collection of vintage magazines from the 1960s, a time he refers to as one of the golden ages of couture. “When I first started learning how to illustrate, I’d look to that era,” Wu tells BAZAAR.com, “and so, I just want to reflect that.” In addition to a modern take on the smoky eye using Jason Wu Beauty’s Flora 25 palette, Kendal explains that the brand’s Jewel Stick eye shadow was instrumental in designing the show’s statement makeup looks. “We used a beautiful yellow as a pop of color in the inner corner to bring even more interest to the eye, which also makes it great for day or night,” Kendal says.

To give the eyes their moment, Kendal and Wu leaned more minimal for the completion of the models’ makeup, using the Jason Wu Beauty Tinted Moisturizer Meets CC Cream (which launches an updated shade range at the end of the month) and simply prepping their lips with the brand’s hydrating Everyday Lip Mask. “It just kisses your skin, but it doesn’t overpower,” Wu says of his tinted moisturizer. “I think there’s a lot of very pigmented product out there, but this isn’t one. This moisturizer is really focused on enhancing natural beauty in a way that still feels super glamorous.” To finish off each beauty look, Kendal and team used Jason Wu Beauty’s Brows Before Boys powder for a soft arch, Single & Ready to Shimmer highlighters, and their new Hot Fluff Love Mascara, which officially launches in March.

Ahead of makeup application, the models’ faces were prepped using 111SKIN’s Y Theorem Bio Cellulose Facial Mask to rejuvenate their skin, along with the brand’s Celestial Black Diamond Eye Mask to increase hydration while minimizing fine lines. The neutral nail looks seen on the runway were created by celebrity manicurist Deborah Lippmann, using essentials like her brand’s Cuticle Oil, Hard Rock Nail Strengthening Base and Top Coat, and a single coat of Gel Lab Pro Nail Polish in the shade Naked.

For Wu, who recently celebrated the one-year anniversary of his namesake beauty line, the introduction of a broader range of color cosmetics is a first for his brand, which initially launched with a more streamlined collection of products. “Our overall line aesthetic has been shades of nudes,” he says. “This year is the first time we’ve gone out of neutrals into pop colors, and we’ll be doing more of that in the future, because color tends to be a big part of my body of work. We’re on year two, so we wanted to bring something different to the table.”

As his signature fashion often informs the aesthetic of his beauty collection and vice versa, Wu says working with Kendal this season is essentially a match made in heaven. “I’m excited to be working with the master Diane Kendal,” he adds. “I think it’s like our 10th year collaborating—I’ve learned so much from her.”
