Hair expert Chris Appleton is obsessed with the ashy-platinum blonde hairstyle that’s pervaded over the last several years—in part because he’s the person who spearheaded the trend. (He was responsible for Kim Kardashian’s popular platinum moment in 2018.) So when it comes to creating and maintaining his own platinum hair look, the expert doesn’t play around.
Appleton’s bleach-blonde hair has become a personal trademark and “symbolic of [his] identity,” the stylist says—but his extensive use of bleach has come with a cost. “With my hair being blonde, I have actually suffered quite a lot with breakage,” he explains. “To bleach my hair this light, I need all that protein, all that strength I can get.”
In order to wear the color regularly without compromising his hair health, he’s landed on a routine that maintains both his striking cool tone and silky-smooth texture. Below, he breaks down his go-to products for hydration, bond strengthening, and color maintenance—including his “secret weapon[s]” for tone touchups—as well as the styling techniques responsible for his hair’s texture and volume.

Appleton begins his routine with a thorough bond-strengthening hair wash using Color Wow’s 100% clean, residue-free Color Security Shampoo, followed with the same brand’s Money Hair Masque for an additional layer of hydration. “This is amazing for rich, expensive looking hair,” Appleton says of the masque. “Not only does it smell great, but it’s also really light.” Next, he applies his “secret weapon” for color maintenance: Color Wow’s Toning Foam. The color control mousse contains a lavender tint that offsets the brassier undertones from his natural brown hair. “My pet peeve is when my hair looks yellow,” Appleton says.
He then kicks off his styling process with Leandro Limited’s hairdryer and a small round hairbrush. Blowdrying in a forward direction, he curls his bangs upwards for lift and shape and parts his hair opposite from its natural direction for extra volume. He then uses Bed Head’s Hair Stick to manipulate his hair and make it more pliable—and for further shaping, goes in with Evo’s Box o’ Bollox Texture Paste, which he applies to his hair in one direction before pushing his bangs the opposite way for an extra lift. “[Any product] too oily makes my hair flat. Anything too dry and matte just makes my hair look dry because it’s got the bleach. This is a nice combination,” he says.

Finally, he shares his second secret weapon for color maintenance: Color Wow’s Root Coverup Powder in Platinum/Light Blonde. Using a small brush, he paints the powder onto the roots of his hair like highlights, elongating the blonde in his hair while maintaining the shadow from his darker roots. The product is his go-to remedy for color touchups when a full-on appointment isn’t feasible. It’s also smudge-resistant and sweat proof, so he can work out with the product still secure in his hair.
