Tracee Ellis Ross’s New Song Is All About Celebrating Hair Rituals

Tracee Ellis Ross is a woman of many talents, from actress to singer to haircare entrepreneur. Now, the Pattern beauty founder is using her voice to celebrate Black hair culture. The brand just launched the newest addition to its Treatment collection: the Transition Mask, the ideal hydrator for aiding the change of relaxed hair back to natural. But unlike previous launches, this new mask comes with its own single.

“‘Legacy’ is a beautiful celebration of the ritual of hair care being self-care,” Ross tells BAZAAR.com. “Our music, and our hair, are rooted in our authentic beauty, and this song is where the two meet. The memory of sitting between your mother’s or your grandmother’s legs while they care for your hair is a time-honored tradition that many of us know so well. This song is a celebration of this ritual that we as a community continue to uphold.”

Over the weekend, Ross debuted the song, which was originally written as a poem before Pattern launched in 2019, she tells us. A short music video lives on Instagram as well.

“From the first moment ‘Legacy’ was created, it was meant to be a song,” she explains. “I hope it offers a sense of belonging and the message that we are worthy of being cherished.”

After her musical debut in The High Note, which released in 2020, it’s no surprise that the bona fide hair icon has brought her voice to Pattern. In fact, music and hair care have always gone hand in hand for Ross.

“I’m always listening to music, even when doing my routine,” she explains, adding that she curated playlists for Pattern with some of her personal favorite hits for customers to tune in to while caring for their hair, or even to indulge in as a moment of self-care. “These are filled with melodies of our perseverance, hymns of hope and togetherness, and anthems filled with pride,” she says.

While “Legacy” touches on Black hair culture, the new Transition Mask delves further into the idea. “As we expand our portfolio, we are able to lean further into the needs of the curly, coily, and tight textured community,” Ross says. “We found there was a need for a product that nourishes transitioning strands back to health. I love how it really prevents breakage and fortifies strands.”

Alongside the mask, Pattern also released its best-selling hair pick in a fresh tortoiseshell print and a new satin cap—perfect for protecting strands overnight.

All three launches are available to shop online at patternbeauty.com. “Legacy” can be listened to anywhere music is streamed, or online at traceeellisross.lnk.to/legacy.
