Ariana DeBose’s BAFTA and Critics’ Choice Awards Looks Paid Tribute to Her Latinx Roots

It’s been a winning awards season for Ariana DeBose.

The West Side Story star has been sweeping the awards show circuit for her riveting performance as Anita in Steven Spielberg’s acclaimed revival of the Broadway classic — having scooped a Screen Actors Guild Award, a Golden Globe, and, just this weekend, a BAFTA and a Critic’s Choice Award. For her double awards show day, DeBose and her styling duo Zadrian and Sarah wanted to pay homage to Anita and to DeBose’s own AfroLatina roots, so they selected ensembles from Carolina Herrera and Oscar de la Renta, two brands founded by Latinx designers.

“It’s so rare in your work life that you get to be your full self and have who you are be seen and embraced. So much of this season has gotten to be about celebrating different parts of my identity. That seems to be the whole theme of not only this weekend, but of my West Side Story journey and my fashion journey as well,” DeBose tells BAZAAR.com. “So it was really lovely to get to pay homage to Latinx designers this weekend, as that’s a huge part of who I am. Also, let’s be honest, Hispanics rule.”

For the Critics Choice Awards, DeBose wore look 41 from Carolina Herrera’s Fall 2022 collection, an ensemble that she witnessed come down the runway in person earlier this year and instantly knew had to be a part of her awards season wardrobe.

“Unlike perhaps some other awards season moments we’ve worked on in the past, this collaboration happened so wonderfully organically. Both brands were ones that Ariana has been an ardent fan of from the very beginning of her press tour for West Side Story,” says Zadrian Smith.

“Which led to her attending the Carolina Herrera show with me in New York in person, and when she saw this golden yellow gown come down the runway, she grabbed my hand and squeezed!” adds Sarah Edmiston.

When it came down to the BAFTAS, DeBose and her styling team went the custom route, enlisting Fernando Garcia of Oscar de la Renta for another yellow number that paid homage to Anita.

“The custom Oscar de la Renta dress was born over drinks and a beautiful creative conversation with designer Fernando Garcia,” said Smith. “When you work with such iconic fashion houses, the process is so collaborative. They really bring a client’s ethos and identity to life, and the team sent over six stunning custom sketches and of course, the one we chose is what you’ll see on the BAFTA carpet.”

DeBose’s two standout looks this weekend were about so much more than crafting a mere red carpet moment. For the actress and her fashion team, the whirlwind awards marathon was a chance to reiterate the impact of Latinx creatives in Hollywood, the fashion industry, and beyond.

“This day was our moment to connect with Ariana’s identity as a Afro-Latina woman, and celebrate how powerful and formative the role of Anita has been for girls and women who look like Ari,” said Edmiston.

Smith echoed that sentiment, adding, “We chose two [Latinx founded brands] who share Ariana’s values and our values. Then we started thinking about the designs themself and we adamantly had not done anything in the Anita color palette throughout the entire course of the tour.” The red and yellow detailing on the dress was a link back to Anita’s costume in the film, originally conceptualized by costume designer Paul Tazewell, according to the stylists. Says Smith, “We hope it’s a subtle nod to the film that got her to this moment.”
