Denis Villeneuve’s 2021 adaptation of Frank Herbert’s best-selling novel, Dune, is many things to want in a film. It features Hollywood favorites Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya in breathtaking and otherworldly costume design, and has a total of 10 Oscar nominations. It’s an epic onscreen adaptation you’ll want to check off your watch list ahead of the Academy Awards.
Set in the distant future of the universe, the plot centers on House Atreides, a noble family of the Great Houses under the feudal empire of the Dune universe known as the Imperium. The family’s youngest heir, psychically gifted Paul Atreides (Chalamet), must migrate from his home planet of Caladan to the dangerous world of Arrakis. There, he is tasked by the Imperium’s ruler to manage operations of the Spice Melange, the universe’s most sought-after commodity that resides exclusively on the arid planet and is guarded by colossal sandworms—formidable and deadly Arrakeen forces of nature.
On the planet, Paul also joins forces with the Arrakis people known as the Fremen, including the familiar Chani Kynes (Zendaya), who appears in Paul’s nightly visions and becomes his eventual love interest.
While starring notable actors such as Oscar Isaac (as Leto Atreides I), Rebecca Ferguson (as Lady Jessica Atreides), and Jason Momoa (as Duncan Idaho), the film’s most notable takeaways lie in the area of production. Amounting to an immersive onscreen experience of Herbert’s epic vision that is a full explosion of the senses, Dune‘s production has sourced the majority of its Oscar nominations, including those for Best Cinematography, Adapted Screenplay, Film Editing, Costume Design, Visual Effects, and Production Design.
And the Dune experience is far from over. Only two-thirds of Herbert’s initial book (from a six-book series) are covered in this film, with the rest set to unfold in its now-confirmed sequel, Dune: Part Two. Until then, see more information on how to watch Villeneuve’s acclaimed 2021 adaptation below.
