Anachronisms are Bridgerton‘s trademark. Glitter gowns reign in ballrooms. Yellow parking lines pave streets. And corsets, for some reason, are lung-crushingly tied under billowing empire waistline dresses.
Most anachronistic of all, however, is the ton’s seemingly deep appreciation of 21st-century pop songs. Season 1 of the hit Netflix period drama saw a Regency-era reimagining of familiar anthems like “Wildest Dreams” by Taylor Swift and “thank u, next” by Ariana Grande. Instead of relying on synth-heavy productions, the tracks are given the string quartet treatment and rendered into period-appropriate and cinematic instrumental covers.
The soundtrack of the second season of Bridgerton, available Friday, March 25, will be no different. Harry Styles, Rihanna, Miley Cyrus, and even Madonna are among those who will set the musical stage for the steamy love triangle between Anthony Bridgerton (Jonathan Bailey), Kate Sharma (Simone Ashley), and Edwina Sharma (Charithra Chandran).
“I chose all of these songs for very specific reasons,” Bridgerton showrunner Chris Van Dusen told Netflix’s companion site, Tudum. “Each one is incredibly powerful and deeply emotional in its own special way. I always try many different songs for any one scene before landing on the perfect one to use.”
The use of familiar pop songs for a story set in the 19th century, Van Dusen added, can help shrink the psychological distance between the audience and the characters. “It’s a good link for everyone to instantly recognize their own feelings in these characters that are in a very different environment than they are,” he said. “But these songs that people know immediately help connect you even more to these characters. And, obviously, they’re all dealing with feelings that everyone still deals with now. But I feel like that added level of the covers just helps bring people in even more and just gives it such a unique style for these dance sequences.”
