Tucked into the secluded landscapes of upstate New York, only a forty-minute drive outside the crowded streets of Manhattan, lies a hidden gem called Tuxedo Park. The cloistered lake-side community which gave its name to the dinner jacket has been been a well-guarded secret of those in the know for more than a century. For life-long New Yorker and rising fashion entrepreneur Sai De Silva, the storied summer haven feels like a fresh discovery.
“I grew up in New York City, but a friend only recently introduced [my family] to Tuxedo Park,” says De Silva, who just purchased a vacation home in the area. “When most people think of New York, they think of the city and don’t realize the state is jeweled with lakes and mountains. Just a forty-mile drive north of Manhattan, and you’re completely surrounded by 75,000 acres of spectacular wilderness.”
The quiet corners of upstate New York have long been a favorite weekend escape for local East Coasters, and Tuxedo Park’s close proximity to home is part of the draw for De Silva. Rather than spending her summer Fridays sitting in beach-bound traffic, she relishes the chance to take in the picturesque views of the Hudson River valley while clipping along to her weekend retreat. “For long weekends or summer trips with the kids, we just want to be able to get there quickly,” says De Silva.
For De Silva, her newfound love for the iconic locale goes well beyond the stylish setting. “[Tuxedo Park] is a place where I can escape, shut off, be quiet, meditate, and just relax,” she says of the treasured moments of gratitude she often enjoys during her stays. “After I spend time upstate, I feel recharged, rested and just ready to tackle anything that comes my way.”
In collaboration with INFINITI, De Silva shares an insider guide to the spots that make this a luxurious weekend retreat.
Sai’s Long Weekend Itinerary
“When you’re a spur-of-the-moment type of family like we are, you’ve got to be ready to pack-up and go. As a New Yorker, I think it’s such a luxury to have the ability to get out of the city and drive away from the hustle and bustle of it all.”
