Kourtney Kardashian on Motherhood, Kravis, and PDA as a Form of Self-Care

On a recent sunny day, I walk into Nobu Ryokan Malibu—the Japanese-style inn famously frequented by the Kardashian-Jenner clan—to interview the world’s most famous family in advance of their new Hulu reality. In an intimidatingly small room, I find four of the five Kardashian-Jenner sisters (sans Kim), plus Mama Kris. They’re all styled to reflect their personalities: Kylie in a pantsuit with sheer pants, Kendall in a jersey pencil skirt with towering patent platforms, Khloé in a hot pink pantsuit, and Kris in a beaded blazer and her new-ish signature accessory, a walking cane.

And then there’s Kourtney, who is wearing Nobu’s spa robe. “Don’t I look the best?” she says with a smile, sounding like a meme. I’ve been standing in front of her for 30 seconds, and she’s already giving TikTok audio gold. The truth is that her famously blunt quotes come easily—and she really doesn’t understand the hype.

“You never know what’s going to be the meme moment,” Kourtney tells me. “Like Kylie singing about tequila and me saying, ‘I’m just appreciating my bread.’ How is this so iconic? Even watching it, I’m still like, How? Why? What’s so special about this?”

As we’ve all seen for years on Keeping Up With the Kardashians on E! and soon The Kardashians on Hulu, Kourtney appears to downplay most moments, but what she’s really doing is protecting her energy and not putting pressure on herself to perform. That’s why a pseudo wedding in Vegas with Travis Barker was just her style.

“It was perfect. It was a dream. They wouldn’t give us the license,” says Kourtney.

“It would have been her dream if it went through,” Khloé adds.

I turn to a smiling Kris, who is used to elaborate weddings for her daughters. “She told me way before that she was maybe [getting married in Vegas], and it was on the table. And I said ‘You live your life,’ but inside I was dying because I want to be there. It’s my first-born daughter and her first marriage.”

Understandable. Also understandable is the love story of Kourney and Travis, which Kourtney’s sisters have supported for a very long time—even before Kourt was ready.

“I have a secret psychic ability that no one knows about,” Kendall explains. “I always had a feeling [that they would be together]. I would encourage her every day. I’d be like, ‘Just do it. Just try. Take it to the next level!’”

“I just had a fear, you know?” Kourtney reveals.

“We all were secretly like, come on, they’ve just got to hook up!” Khloé adds.

Hook up, they did. And continue to do, anywhere and everywhere. I’m here for all of it. On the unapologetic Kravis PDA, Kourt owns the choice.

“I think that Travis looks at life in a really special way like no one that I’ve known, to where it’s as if nobody exists,” Kourt explains. “I can get more shy but it’s helped me so much to be present and pretend like no one’s there. My mom will be like, ‘Can you stop for one second and talk to me?’”

Khloé chimes in, “I think it’s a beautiful thing. We were raised with really affectionate parents. I think it’s beautiful for people to see love and affection. Whatever floats everyone’s boat.”

So, in a way, PDA is self-care. On the subject, I asked the mothers in the building what mindfulness, boundaries, and alone time looks like for them as women in the public eye.

“My alone time? Stepping away with friends, when [my kids] go to sleep and having the night to myself,” says Kylie, mom to Stormi and a fresh baby boy. “Watching TV. I’ve watched Encanto 100 times, so until [Stormi] goes to sleep is when I get to watch my own TV shows and have my alone time.”

“My daughter sleeps from 8 PM to 8 AM,” Khloé shares. “I don’t want to work out at 6 AM but I do because that’s my time. I want to wake her up every morning. I also make sure that I’m at her gymnastics and I block that time out with my film crew.”

As for Kourtney, who has made a business out of mindfulness:

“Normalcy. Any little bit of normalcy I can steal. This weekend, I have no plans. [I like to] go to kids sports—just being a true mom. Being in sweats, no makeup, my hair in a ponytail—that makes me so happy. Working out is also something I need for my mind, just to feel good. I figured out the little routines and how to squeeze them in. Taking baths. My kids are a bit older now. And I rotate time with their dad [Scott Disick]. When they’re with their dad is when I schedule a night away with my fiancé.”

Once we wrap, I walk out of Nobu and head home to my very normal life. Picking up some snacks for my kids from the market, I’m struck by a brief moment of envy: what if I could just sit in the Malibu sun in a spa robe and drink an 818 Tequila margarita while having items fetched for me, like a Kardashian? But it’s clear from even a short period in their presence that, although the Kardashian-Jenners are intensely famous and can’t go outside without a paparazzi parade following them, deep inside they’re no different than the rest of us. They crave all the same things: respect, love, joy, and a break from Encanto.
