Part of the appeal of Art Basel is the jam-packed social calendar , filled with a myriad of dinners, panels, along with other parties. Tuesday night’s events included a small gathering with a star-studded guest list hosted by Hassan Pierre, the cofounder and CEO of Maison de Mode. At the intimate dinner, creatives celebrated Solomon R. Guggenheim’s first Black curator, Dr . Ashley James.

“I said yes to the Guggenheim because I love conceptual and minimalist art, ” James said. “And the Guggenheim has a particular capacity for displaying such art and participating in meaningful conversation. ”

Bringing together collectors and leads across the fashion, journalism, art, and tech industries, the event took place at the famous Mr. Chow restaurant. Some of the guests in attendance included visual artist Mickalene Thomas, interior designer Robert Stilin, and fashion historian Pamela Golbin—all of whom arrived on the scene to celebrate the Guggenheim’s latest appointment.

The night also included an intimate conversation between James and journalist Lola Ogunnaike. The pair talked about everything from art in the age of social media to the pressures that come with being a trailblazer . “Being the first is very weighted, ” Ogunnaike said. “Breaking barriers comes with responsibility. Children of immigrants are often pushed into more lucrative careers or traditional jobs, not like a journalist or a museum curator. ”

James, who was simply born to Jamaican parents, explained that her family always encouraged her to follow along with her dreams. “My parents were very supportive of my career, ” she said. “My brother can be an actor, screenwriter, and amazing drawer. He inspired me to do my own thing. ”
