When Allison Aberizk and Justin Xavier met at a Comme des Garçons exhibition in New York in 2017, there was an immediate connection. “Once we found each other, we told each other our stories and were like, ‘Dude, we’re pretty much doing the same damn thing,’” recalls Xavier, who has moved between styling, modeling, art direction, and vintage sourcing after coming to fashion by way of skateboarding. Aberizk has been in styling, buying, and even textile design. “We should just team up,” he remembers saying. Several years later, Aberizk and Xavier, hailing from San Diego and Brooklyn respectively, have opened Aberizk, a multi-brand concept store devoted to emerging yet unseen independent designers and rare vintage finds.

The Nolita shop and site is a destination for the modern-day cool girl looking for bold, directional pieces. Think vintage Roberto Cavalli prints, ’90s minimalist finds, and buzzy Instagram brands like Danielle Guizio and Paloma Wool. Kendall Jenner recently sported a 1996 Jean Paul Gaultier X-ray dress she picked up in the store. (“When I got it, I was like, ‘Dude, I wish I had long legs and hips,’” Xavier laughs.) Current favorites include Rasta-printed 2001 Dior pants by John Galliano, a 2001 Donna Karan jacket with “crazy patches,” and a vintage JPG jacket with corseting.

“It’s the downtown girl who will mix and match some crazy designer piece with some military cargos,” Aberizk explains.

“If you come in, you’re like, ‘I want to be seen!’” Xavier adds. “We want the person to walk out of the shop like, ‘Oh, my God, that’s so tight.’”

The shop, which also has a digital presence, emulates the ultra-curated, fully conceptualized style of Japanese retail experiences. “Everyone is curated into one pocket,” Xavier explains. “We went to Japan in 2018 for the first time. Once we got back to New York, we were like, ‘We just have to do something here. That Japan kind of vibe. Just pop into a shop and get the essence of a culture.’”

Walk in, note the gallery-esque space—small objects setting the vibe (a Dennis Rodman VHS tape sits on one shelf) and burning incense filling the room (“Everyone walks in and is like, ‘It smells so good in here,’” Xavier says)—and be treated “like a superstar.”

The couple is also a source of expertise in next trends in vintage. “Right now, I’m seeing people gravitating towards the Y2K early-2000s era. Low-rise, micro miniskirts, and logomania opulence,” Aberizk muses. “We see a rise in club-kid and ’90s-ravers fashion: really oversized pants, fuzzy and colorful fabrics, platform shoes, and chunky jewelry. Also, we noticed a shift towards futuristic-meets-postapocalyptic feelings—with repurposed and deconstructed pieces. Kind of The Fifth Element inspired.”

A sheer Christian Dior nude mesh label tee available on the website screams Paris Hilton in her Y2K prime; a pair of 1995 Nos vintage Thor racing pants could easily have graced Limelight or Shelter in their first life. The clothes Aberizk and Xavier source feel very modern-day Bella Hadid. Their style icons include Björk, André 3000, and Naomi Campbell.

What else should we look out for in vintage trends? “Another huge trend we see time and time again is graphic, digitally printed fabrics,” Aberizk continues. “From designers like Jean Paul Gaultier, Vivienne Tam, and Cop Copine. These kind of all-over bold prints really catch your eye and are a piece of art on their own. Photographic prints that pull imagery from Renaissance paintings, pop art, or use designs to emphasize the body’s curves.”

There is a lot of diversity in Aberizk and Xavier’s vision, but one thing remains clear: The clothes are for those who want to be stopped in the streets.
